HOW TO MEASURE PROGRESS

We’re hard-wired to think progress should be a linear occurrence, but the most successful people will all tell you that progress is anything but that.

In order to continuously move forward, you will take some steps backward along the way. This is inevitable. In order to grow, you need to be challenged. Sometimes those challenges will cause setbacks, but it’s what we do with those setbacks that will determine how that line on the graph will continue to shape.

When something steps in front of your way and begins to challenge you, look at it objectively.

Ask yourself a few questions:

  • 👉🏼 What is happening right now?
  • 👉🏼 What lesson do I need to learn?
  • 👉🏼 What is the lowest hanging fruit that I can change to create some momentum?
  • 👉🏼 How do I readjust after I get past this?

Sometimes these setbacks come with emotional moments, and it’s fine to take a few minutes and acknowledge the emotions you are feeling and experiencing. The next step is to be objective about the situation you are in.

Last week we spoke about finding and changing only the things you can control. Keeping your focus on those elements, instead of the things you cannot directly influence. If you can understand that concept, and tie it into what progress looks like for you here — you’ve got a great toolbox to pull from to work on your goals!

Think of one thing in your life where progress was anything but linear, but you still kept moving forward and maybe even achieved your goal.
